Research experiences

Undergraduate researcher(RA) / Apr. 2019 ~ Feb. 2020 / Pusan National University.
As part of a research project funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea, I had the opportunity to contribute to the development of databases and simulation models aimed at improving productivity in the construction industry. The project was significant, with a total funding amount of $40,000. My specific role in the project involved conducting a comprehensive literature review on the topic of productivity in the construction industry. Through my research, I was able to identify the key themes and ideas that were most commonly discussed in the Korean Society of Civil Engineering (KSCE) journal with respect to productivity. This work was crucial in laying the groundwork for the larger project and helped to ensure that we were able to focus our efforts and resources on the areas of greatest need. Overall, this was a rewarding experience that allowed me to apply my research skills in a practical and meaningful way, and I am proud to have been a part of such an important project.
In 2019, I conducted research in the field of text mining, specifically analyzing research trends. With the guidance of my advisor, Y.K. Huh, I worked independently to complete this project and gain valuable skills and knowledge along the way. Throughout the process, I gained a deeper understanding of statistical programs such as R and learned how to apply various research methodologies, including association rules and network analysis, to my work. This experience was challenging but ultimately rewarding, as it helped me to further develop my research skills and provided me with a solid foundation for future work in this area. Overall, I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked on this project and for the valuable lessons and experiences it provided me with.

Analysis on Research Trend of Productivity Using Text Mining - Focusing on KSCE Journal -
Journal
Korean Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, 21(2), 15-21.
Abstract
The relationship between keywords, found in all productivity related papers published in the KSCE journal for last 15 years, were analyzed in order to reveal a research trend in the area using text mining and A-Priori algorithm. As the results, it is found that the word of ‘productivity’ is most closely related to the words of ‘work’ and ‘labor’. Futhermore, the word is somewhat related to those of ‘factor’, ‘model’, simulation’, and ‘work time’. It is also revealed that, on the other hand, the words of ‘machine’ and ‘equipment’ have little relationships with the keyword. This research will be a great help for academia to understand a research trend in the area of construction productivity.

Graduate researcher(RA) / Sep. 2022 ~ present / Pusan National University.
I was fortunate enough to work on a research project that was funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea, with a total budget of $80,000. The focus of this project was on developing design-supporting information systems for small and medium-sized apartments. As part of the team, I was responsible for contributing to the design and implementation of the system, which included developing algorithms and building databases to support the software. This was a challenging project that required a great deal of technical expertise and attention to detail, but it was also extremely rewarding. Through my work on this project, I gained valuable experience in software development and database management, which I have been able to apply to other projects since.
After my career with Daewoo E&C, I participated in ongoing research with my advisor.

Analysis on Limitations of Municipal Architectural Review Procedure for Small and Medium-sized Apartments
Journal
Korean Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, 23(6), 15-20.
Abstract
A single-person-house-holder has been increased since 2000s in South Korea, which led to high demands for small and medium-sized new houses requiring municipal architectural review committee consideration. And it has been argued recently that there are many limitations in the review system. Comprehensive expert surveys and interviews were conducted and the results were analyzed using the AHP to explore limitations in B city. The analysis with the data of 27 survey responds found that ‘Related ordinance itself’, ‘Committee members limitation’, and ‘Absurdity on administrative procedure’ are problematic in order of priority. It is also revealed that architects and administrative officials have different thoughts on the seriousness of those. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data on studies for improving the system.

Industry experiences (Daewoo E&C)
Daewoo Engineering and Construction (E&C) is one of the largest construction companies in South Korea, with a primary focus on the development of housing projects, particularly apartment buildings. Through a highly competitive process, I was able to secure a position with the company, beating out a ratio of more than 1:50 applicants. As a member of the team, I was able to earn a salary of over $50,000 per year while working on exciting and challenging projects that allowed me to develop my skills and expertise in the field. Being a part of a company with such a strong reputation and track record of success was an incredible opportunity, and I am grateful for the experience and knowledge that I gained during my time there.

My first career was with Daewoo Engineering and Construction (E&C) as a construction engineer. I was immediately thrown into a challenging environment, working alongside more than 50 staff members on a massive city development project that encompassed 43 apartment buildings in a single sector. The LumpSum contract for the project was valued at approximately $800 million, making it one of the largest and most complex projects that I had ever worked on. Despite the scale of the undertaking, our team was able to work collaboratively and efficiently to complete the project on time and to the satisfaction of our client. This experience was a pivotal moment in my career, allowing me to develop my skills and expertise in project management, team leadership, and problem-solving. Overall, I am proud to have been a part of such a successful and challenging project, and I am grateful for the lessons and insights that I gained along the way.

Following the successful completion of my initial project at Daewoo E&C, I was recognized for my strong leadership skills and promoted to the position of Project Manager (PM) team leader. In this new role, I was responsible for overseeing a medium-sized apartment complex construction site with a LumpSum contract amount of approximately $170 million. This project was a significant challenge, but I was able to draw on my past experience and expertise to ensure that the work proceeded smoothly and efficiently. Through my leadership and guidance, I was able to bring together a talented and dedicated team of professionals who worked together seamlessly to achieve our shared goals. Overall, this experience was another milestone in my career and one that helped me to further develop my leadership abilities, project management skills, and overall understanding of the construction industry.
